Facelift vs Ponytail Facelift - What Is the Difference?
Facelift vs Ponytail Facelift - What is the Difference?
If you are exploring surgical facial rejuvenation, you may have come across both the traditional facelift and the ponytail facelift — and wondered what sets them apart. Both are surgical procedures designed to lift and reposition the deeper facial structures and tissues, restoring a more youthful contour. But they are not interchangeable, and choosing between them depends entirely on your anatomy and what you are hoping to achieve.
What is the Ponytail Facelift?
The ponytail facelift, also referred to as the scarless facelift, is a technique that lifts and repositions facial tissues through incisions that are carefully hidden within the hairline. The name reflects the lifted, elevated result it creates. The reason it is sometimes called scarless is not that there are no incisions, but that they are so discreetly placed they are virtually undetectable.
In most cases the procedure addresses the upper and midface. Where the neck also requires attention, a small additional incision behind the ear may be made, but this remains minimal and well concealed.
What is a Deep Plane Facelift?
There are multiple techniques for facelift surgery, Dr Jamshidi performs Deep plane facelift - a technique that addresses deeper structures of the facial tissue for better lifting and repositioning. The incisions (scar) sits in front of the ear at the tragus, continuing naturally around it. When performed well, this heals beautifully and is very well concealed.
The deep plane approach is particularly effective for those with significant skin laxity, heavy jowling, or a fuller neck that requires more comprehensive lifting and contouring.
Which one is right for you?
This is where anatomy matters more than age. As a general rule:
The ponytail facelift tends to suit those who need lifting primarily in the upper to midface - often, though not exclusively a younger patient who’s skin has good elasticity, but who’s facial structures have begun to descend. There is no strict age limit; what matters is what your face needs.
The deep plane facelift is better suited to those with more significant skin excess, deeper laxity, or heavier neck that requires more thorough addressing. It is the more comprehensive of the two procedures and delivers results that are equally natural - simply more extensive.
The best way to determine which approach is right for you is through a consultation, where Dr Jamshidi will assess your anatomy, your concerns and your goals before making a recommendation tailored to you.
